empire. It consists of two contiguous cities, each
separately surrounded by walls and together en-
tered by 16 gates. The northern city consists of
three enclosures. The outer is used by traders,
the second contains the foreign legations, the
inner enclosure contains the palace of the em-
peror. The wall of the imperial city is 40 feet
high.
