From this natural bowl in the Black Hills, Captain Stevens and Anderson, on November 11, 1935, started the ascent which took them to a height of 14 miles, the greatest ever reached by man. The almost perpendicular walls of the bowl reach a height of over 400 feet, giving protection from all winds.
