The site of Pocatello was laid out by Govern-
ment surveyors in 1889 in accordance with an
Act of Congress passed September 1, 1888,
which created it from what was then a part of
the Fort Hall Indian Reservation. All East and
West streets were named in honor of early day
Western characters, while North and South
streets were designated as avenues and named
after United States presidents.
