These gold dredgers working on the Yuba
River are the mechanical replacement of the
'49-er, who panned the gravel for gold nug-
gets and gold particles lying in the stream
courses. The process of drawing the gravel
from as deep as 100 ft. to bedrock, washing
and amalgamating, is all done in one con-
tinuous operation within these dredges.
