The Ashley River Memorial Bridge spanning
the Ashley River at Charleston, S. C., forms an 32
important link in the Atlantic Coastal Highway 12,400
between North Atlantic states and Florida.
This bridge, built at a cost of $1,200,000, was
dedicated May 6, 1926, to the memory of South
Carolina's soldiers dead of the World War.
To accommodate the limited navigation of the
Ashley River, a double bascule draw of 110 feet
is provided. This bridge has been declared by
prominent engineering authorities to be one of
the most beautiful structures in the United States
