No. 178. BATTLE OF THE BON HOMME
RICHARD AND THE SERAPIS. One of the fiercest
and most desperate sea fights in history. It occurred off
the coast of Scotland, on September 23rd, 1779, between
the Bon Homme Richard, commanded by Paul Jones, of
the American Navy, and the British Frigate Serapis,
Captain Pearson. Jones moved his ship close to the
Serapis and fastened them together, and in this position
they fought for two hours. Both vessels took fire and the
losses in this close range struggle were very great. The
Serapis surrendered and Jones had scarcely time to
transfer his men to her before his own sank.
