BAPTISM OF POCAHONTAS. While
visiting a treacherous relative, Chief Japazaws, in 1612,
Pocahontas, in exchange for a copper kettle, was deliv-
ered into the hands of Captain Samuel Argall, who took
her to Jamestown to be held as a hostage, in the hope
of making terms with her father, the Indian King Pow-
hatan. This plan proving a failure, Pocahontas remained
at Jamestown, was taught the English language, became
a devout Christian, and was baptized in the church there
under the name of Rebecca, and shortly after narried.
