BAPTISM OF VIRGINIA DARE. The
first white child of English-speaking parents born in
America, August 18, 1587. Her mother, wife of Ananias
Dare, was the daughter of Governor White, head of the
colony founded by Sir Walter Raleigh on Roanoke Island,
North Carolina, in 1587. This colony, consisting of
eighty-nine men, seventeen women and eleven children,
during the absence of the Governor, who had gone to
England for supplies, disappeared completely in 1590,
and was never seen or heard of again.
