Returning from Market. A frequent scene on the
bleak snow-covered steppes. In Russia as in most
countries, the business of the country districts is centred
in certain towns – market towns and thither in com-
pany with his neighbours, the Russian armer journeys
to dispose of his produce. Company is sought for the
sake of the mutual protection from the dangers of the
wilds, the dreary journey being enlivened by occasional
calls at wayside inns, where, in a glass of vodka the
cold and dreariness of the way are forgotten.
