These sudden and fierce storms are frequently met with on
the plains of central Russia and especially in winter time
The wind blows with hurricane force and the air is
laden with snow and sleet rendering progress ditficult
and well nigh impossible ; terror seizes the horses and
of times despair lavs hold on the man, so that unless help
is near, both are doomed to miserable end.
