Praying in the Temple. Women are not allowed here
save on rare and stated occasions, but at all hours of the
day set apart for religious exercises the Moors are warned
by a muezzin from the tower outside that “Allah is great
and there is no God but Allah,” and always at such hours
men are kneeling inside on the praying-carpets with their
faces turned to Mecca, or reading from the Korans that lie
open upon mushrabeyeh stands.
