BISHOP, CALIFORNIA
Bishop, named for Bishop Creek, that in turn
was named for Samuel Bishop, a fort Tejon
stockman, who brought the first herd of cattle
into Owens Valley in 1861. Bishop built two
pine cabins on his St. Francis Ranch that was
besieged by Paiutes. After the establishment of
Fort Independence in 1862 settlers came to the
valley in increasing numbers, soon a village
sprang up 3 miles northeast of Bishop's Ranch.
Bishop Creek drops an average of 400 feet per
mile, the back country has over 200 lakes.
