FORT BELKNAP
Located three miles south of Newcastle, Texas
on Hyws. 251, 24, Fm. 61
This U. S. Frontier Army Post was established in
1851 by Bvt. Brig. Gen. William Goldsmith Belknap.
It was one of the most important of its time and
proved to be the hub of a network of roads from
north, south, east and west, including the famous
Butterfield Overland Mail and Stage Line through
Fort Belknap. It was abandoned as an Army Post
in 1867 and fell into decay, restoration beginning
during Texas Centennial, 1936. Just inside the arched
gateway is seen the native conglomerate rock
boulder holding the Bronze Plaque, from the U. S.
Dept. of Int., recognizing Fort Belknap as a Regis-
tered National Historic Landmark. In the distance is
the Commissary's Store which now houses the Museum.
