WASHINGTON MONUMENT, Wakefield, Virginia—Locat-
ed 38 miles east of Fredericksburg on Route 3. This
shaft of Vermont granite weighing about 50 tons was
erected in 1896 on the site now occupied by the Memorial
Mansion. In 1930 it was moved to its present location
where it is encircled by the entrance road.
