MESSINA, the second town of
Cicly in size d importance. Sieges
and earthquakes have plestroyed most
of its historical buildings. The town
is well built and prettily situated at the
foot of an amphitheatre of hills sur-
rounded with vineyards, olive groves,
orcherds card gardens. Its harbor is
the busiest and the best not only in
Sicily but in Italy. The coast towards
Catania is exceedingly beautiful, and is
thought by some to rival the famous
Genoese Riviera.
