PALERMO, capital of the island
of Sicily, and a city of nearly 250,000
inhabitants, has for centuries been
known as "La Felice,"-The Happy
One-and not without reason, for its
surrounding valley is one vast grove
of lemon and orange trees. This is
due, in part, to the immense rock of
Monte Pellegrino, which, rising 2,000
feet above the sea, not only affords a
striking back-ground. but completely
shelters the city from northern winds.
