Two Guns is located on Interstate Highway 40 between Flagstaff and Winslow. It is on the rim of Canyon Diablo (Devil Canyon), a great gorge in the Kaibab sand stone that drops 225 feet and is 500 feet wide. It was named because early travelers experienced so much trouble here. 22,000 years ago a fiery meteor crashed into the earth here. In more recent years this area was a battle ground between the Apache and Navajo tribes. The early traders were killed for the goods they may have had. On Sept. 18, 1857 "Hi Jolly" arrived with his camel train under Lt. Beale. The history of this area is one of tribulation and death. There is a very good book on the history - "Two Guns, Arizona," by Gladwell Richardson . . . M.P. |
