BISHOP, CALIFORNIA
Bishop, largest city in Inyo county, was named
after Samuel Bishop who established the first settle-
ment on Bishop Creek in 1861. Bishop drove 600
head of cattle to the valley from Fort Tejon. Most
of the cattle were stolen by the unfriendly Indians
who gave the early settlers a great deal of trouble.
Today the town is the center of farming and a
vacation paradise. In the winter skiers make this
their stop on the way to the ski area . . . M.P.
