Y-12 PLANT AT OAK RIDGE, TENNESSEE
is a sprawling complex of about 170 buildings.
Y-12 was built during World War II to produce
enriched uranium 235 by the electromagnetic
method and the first production building began
operation January 27, 1944. Operated by Union
Carbide Corporation for the Atomic Energy
Commission.
