August 11, 1978, Max Anderson, Ben Abruzzo and Larry
Newman, left Presque Isle, Me., and made the first suc-
cessful transatlantic crossing in a helium filled balloon. The
trio landed in Miserey, France five days later. About 8,000
persons were on hand at Merle Sprague's clover field to see
them off.
