Additional Details:
A militar fort was established near present-day Buford in 1866 to protect the Overland Trail and the Union Pacific railroad from the Indians. The railroad station was named to honor General John Buford. The fort was renamed Fort Sanders but when the post office was established July 19, 1880, it was called Buford.
