Additional Details:
Constructed in 1962 at a cost of $325,000 and operated by the Metropolitan Park District of Tacoma. This aquarium displays one of the finest collections of Pacific Northwest marine life. The attractively designed two-level building contains 38 tanks displaying invertebrates and fishes of all kinds found in Puget Sound. The main center tank - nearly 50 feet in diameter - can be viewed from both levels. The second level also contains several octopus displays, a specialty of the Aquarium. Also featured are three outdoor pools which contain seal and penguin. A piping and pumping system provides a continuous supply of salt water from the Sound, which is introduced into the main center tank, then circulated to the individual display tanks and outdoor pools, and back into the Sound. The total water capacity of all display tanks is 188,640 gallons.
