POINT DEFIANCE PARK AQUARIUM
Constructed in 1962 at a cost
of $325,000 and
Park District of
operated by the Metropolitan
Tacoma. This aquarium displays one of the finest
collections of Pacific Northwest marine life. The
attractively designed two-level building contains
38 tanks displaying invertebrates and fishes of
all kinds found in Puget Sound. The main center
tank I nearly 50 feet in diameter can be
viewed from both levels. The second level also
contains several octupus displays, a speciality of
the Point Defiance Aquarium. The aquarium also
features three outdoor pools which contain seal
and penguin.
A piping and pumping system provides a con-
tinuous supply of salt water from the Sound,
which is introduced into the main center tank,
then circulated to the individual display tanks
and outdoor pools, and back into the Sound. The
total water capacity of all display tanks is
188,640 gallons.
