Aviation Series 9 This pioneer of the navigation of the air came into existence in the earlier part of the eighteenth century. The first ascent was made by M. Charles, in France, in 1783. The first balloon flight in England was made by an Italian, a Signor Lunardi, a year later. In 1875 Messers Blanchard and Jeffries successfully crossed the Channel from Dover to Calais in a balloon. Since those days, balloons have been brought to a far higher state of perfection, and in 1901, M. Berson and Dr. Suring ascended to height fo 35,000 ft. from Berlin. |
