BALBOA ISLAND
This man-made island is located in Newport Bay a sail- dotted
lagoon-like bay. In the 1860's Anaheim Landing handled sup-
plies for this part of Southern California. When McFaddens
built their railroad to Newport and constructed an outside
wharf freight shipments went to this road. When the bay was
dredged out the dirt was used to build up islands in the bay.
This was once the hangout of Yankee smugglers who traded
with other than Spanish ships. Today this is the largest yacht
harbor on the Pacific Coast. .M.P.
