ELMER KEITH
Elmer Keith was born in Missouri in 1899 and grew up at the end of the
Western frontier period. In 1930, Keith moved his family to a small ranch on
the North Fork of the Salmon River in Idaho, 30 miles from town. This was
his base of operations for hunting, guiding and writing about guns of all kinds.
In 1973, Keith received the very first Outstanding American Handgunner
Award. His writings for more than 50 years have inspired six-gunners all
over the world. Elmer Keith lived the life that many of us would like to, but
few could survive. Much of his life was spent on a backcountry ranch with no
conveniences of any kind. What we call “roughing it” for a few days each year
on a hunting trip was his daily life. Keith, was a hunter all his life and the
results of his many expeditions can be seen here in this exhibit.
