"Oak Hill"-Home of James Monroe. James Monroe,
fifth President of the United States, was born in Westmore-
land Co., Va., April 28th, 1758. He was graduated from
the College of William and Mary in 1776. In 1786, he
married Elizabeth Kortright. Monroe was a man of
means, and had a fine estate at "Oak Hill." When his
wife died in 1830, "Oak Hill" was closed. Monroe sought
the home of his daughter in New York, where he died on
July 4th, 1831.
