Montpelier - Home of James Madison. James
Madison, fourth President of the United States, was born
at Port Conway, Va., March 16th, 1751. He was graduated
from Princeton in 1772. In September, 1794, he married
a beautiful young widow, Mrs. Dorothy Payne Todd.
About the time of his marriage, he built his home at
Montpelier-a large, commodious mansion, designed more
for comfort and hospitality than display; one wing was
exclusively appropriated to his mother. Madison died
here on June 28th, 1836, his widow surviving him thirteen
years.
