Mount Vernon-Home of George Washington. George
Washington, first President of the United States, was born
Feb. 22d, 1732, on the banks of the Potomac, Virginia.
Mount Vernon was built by his half-brother Laurence, who
died in 1752, when George went to Mount Vernon
to live. The house contains about twenty rooms; in the
dining-room (on the right) is the Carrara marble mantel
sent to George Washington from Italy. On Jan. 6th
1759, Washington married Mrs. Martha Custis, a young
widow. He died of pneumonia on Dec. 14th, 1799, his
wife surviving him three years.
