Greenville - Home of Andrew Johnson. Andrew
Johnson, seventeenth President of the United States, was
born in Raleigh, N.C., on Dec. 29th, 1808, and with a very
limited education, began life as a tailor's apprentice at the
age of ten. In 1826 he married Eliza McCardle. His wife,
who was educated, thrifty and industrious, was of great assis-
tance in his career. He was Vice-President when Lincoln
was assassinated, and succeeded to his unexpired term.
Johnson died on July 31st, 1875, near Carter's Station,
Tenn., and was buried near his home in Greenville, Tenn.
His wife survived him one year.
