"Wheatland"-Home of James Buchanan. James
Buchanan, fifteenth President of the United States, was
born near Mercersburgh, Franklin Co., Pa, on April 23d,
1791. He was graduated from Dickinson College in 1809,
and was never married. In 1848, he purchased a small
estate of twenty-two acres, known as "Wheatland." The
house, a substantial brick mansion, was his home when not
occupying an official residence in Washington or London.
He died here on June 1st, 1868.
