James K. Polk, eleventh President of the United States, was born in Pineville, Mecklenberg Co., N. C. on Nov. 2d, 1795. He was graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1818, and in 1924 was married to Sarah Childress. Before the expiration of his term of office (1845-49), he purchased a hiuse in Nashville, and here he died on June 15th, 1849. His remains are buried beneath a temple erected on the grounds., Mrs. Polk continued to live there until her death in 1891.
