James A. Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, was born in Orange Township, Cuyahoga Co., Ohio, Nov. 30th, 1831. He was graduated from Williams College in 1856. In 1858 he married Lucretia Randolph. Monitor was their home except when his official duties called him elsewhere. On July 3rd, 1881, he was shot in the Baltimore and Potomac Railway Depot at Washington by Charles Gulteau. He lingered until Sept. 19th, when he died at Eiberon, NJ, where he had been removed on Sept. 6th. Garfield's remains rest in a beautiful Monument in Lake View Cemetery, Cleveland.
