MASSACHUSETTS STATE MONUMENT. The
Massachusetts Volunteer Soldiers Monument in the National
Military Park of Vicksburg was erected in 1903. It is a memorial
to the 29th, 35th and 36th Infantry of Massachusetts, who fell
in the Vicksburg campaign. It was the first State Monument to
be erected in the National Park; impressive ceremonies marked
its dedication, Governor Bates of Massachusetts having made
the presentation.
