This Russian Orthodox Chapel was built about 1824. Though plainly furnished, it did mark the farthest advance of the Russian Orthodox Church into North America At that time. After the Russians left The building served as a hay barn among other things. until it collapsed in the 1906 Earthquake. Restored first in 1915 and more completely in 1955. It burned to the ground in 1970. in 1973 the chapel was carefully restored to its original appearance. Historic Old Fort located on a Cliff overlooking the Blue Pacific - Founded by the Russians in 1812 - Acquired by the State of California as Historical Landmark #5 in 1906. The Old Fort has been restored. State Hiway #1 between Gualala and Jenner. |
