Additional Details:
TUMACACORI WAS BUILT BY THE FRANCISCAN FATHERS,-PARTIALLY DESTROYED BY INDIANS IN 1840, AND WHEN DISCOVERED BY AMERICANS IN 1850, IT WAS IN A STATE OF COMPLETE RUIN. TODAY, IT IS AN IMPOSING NATIONAL MONUMENT; THE DESOLATE RUINS HAVE BEEN REMOVED, AND MUCH OF THE BUILDING RESTORED AS WAS POSSIBLE WITHOUT MARRING ITS ANTIQUITY. THE MISSION IS A PLEASANT STOPPING-OFF PLACE IN MAKING THE TRIP FROM TUCSON TO THE MEXICAN BORDER TOWN OF NOGALES.
