THE OIL FIELDS NEAR BAKERSFIELD, CALIFORNIA
The city of Bakersfield, at the southern end of the San Joaquin
Valley, owes its rapid rise and much of its presnt prosperity to the
development of the oil resources of Kern County. The oil industry
in this section is immense, the fields being equalled in output only
by those of Baku, Russia. One-eighth of the world's petroleum
comes from here. The oil fields, with their great derricks, when
seen at a distance, present the appearance of a forest of pine trees.
