HABANA: MONUMENTO A LA VOLADURA DEL "MAINE" A fine, delicate monument of Classic lines, facing the sea, devoted to the 253 people who perished in the disaster which occured at the port of Havana February 1898. The two cannons and chains decorating the monument were brought from the wrecked battleship. There is a bronze plate with the names of all of the victims and two sculptures impersonating the grief caused by the catastrophe. In the first moments people thought the ship had been blown up by Spaniards; but a mine from the exterior could only incline the ship were as the explosion, which was interior tore men into pieces and threw them to the other side of the bay more than 500 meters away. |
