Fort Monroe St. Mary, Star of the Sea Catholic Church, Fort Monroe, Old point Comfort, Virginia. Located near the main gate of the old fort. So called because mary means star of the sea. The first St. Mary's was built just before the Civil War. The present structure dates from 1903. Congregation is from garrison and nearby town of Hampton on mainland. Harper's Weekly 1862 shows General McClellan's Army of the Potomac marching past the old St. Mary's.
