JAMES A. GARFIELD was born at Orange, Ohio on
Nov. 19, 1831, and was inaugurated at the age of 49 years.
He was the Republican nominee and was elected by a large
majority in the electoral college. A few weeks after taking
office he was shot down by an assassin and died Sept. 19, 1881.
