The original St. Philip's Church was built of wood in 1681; the present edifice completed in 1838. During war between the state numerous federal shells pierced and organ. At left is the Dock Street Theatre, the oldest legitimate playhouse in America; originally built in 1736 as a theatre and later used as a fashionable hotel. After 1865 it became a vice-clad ruin. Present building restored by Charleston architect, Douglas Ellington. At right is the French Protestant Church, the only Huguenot Church in America. First Huguenot services held in Charleston in 1680. This building erected in 1845. |
