THE ORIGINAL CHURCH WAS BUILT EARLY IN THE 18TH CENTURY, BURNED DOWN ABOUT 1810 AND REBUILT AGAIN IN 1811. DURING THE OCCUPATION BY BRITISH TROOPS IN THE REVOLUTIONERY WAR, THE CHURCH WAS CONVERTED INTO A FORT, WITH CONNON MOUNTED AT THE UPPER WINDOWS AND HORSES STABLED BELOW. SOME OF THE HEADSTONES IN THE OLD CEMETERY DATE AS FAR BACK AS 1600'S. " COME TO LONG ISLAND-LAND OF HISTORY" |
