44 JOHN STREET JOHN STREET CHURCH IN THE HEART OF THE FINANCIAL DISTRICT OF NEW YORK CITY IS THE OLDEST METHODIST SOCIATY IN AMERICA. FOUNDED BY PHILIP EMBURY AND MEMBERS OF HIS METHODIST CLASS WHO MIGRATED TO THE COLONIES FROM BALLINGGRANE, IRELAND IN THE YEAR 1760. SIX YEARS AFTER THEIR ARRIVAL THEY FORMED THEY FORMED THE FIRST METHODIST SOCEITY AND IN 1768 ERECTED WESLEY CHAPEL. SINCE THEN THREE BUILDINGS HAVE STOOD ON THE ORIGINAL SITE. THE PRESENT CHURCH DATING FROM 1841 HAS HAD ITS SANUTARY RESTORED IN 1965. |
