The Municipal Buildings, Glasgow, are situated
on the Eastern side of George Square. They occupy
ground to the extent of 14 acres, and were erected
in 1883-8 from designs by Mr. William Young.
The walls rise to an average height of 75 feet, the
buildings being capped by a tower 240 feet high.
In the centre of George Square are gardens and
statues, including the Scott Monument, a fluted
Doric column 80 feet high, surmounted by a statue
of Sir Walter Scott by H. Ritchie.
