Jamaica Bridge, or The Broomielaw, as it is
frequently called, is a substantial eight-arched
structure opened for traffic in 1899. It replaces a
fine bridge built by Telford in 1836, but which
after some years was found totally inadequate for
the growing needs of the city. A portion of
Telford's bridge was included in the new structure,
which cost nearly £100,000. The Caledonian Rail-
way bridge is situated a short distance further
west.
