A TRADE IN THE MAKING
Wampum is recognized as one of the old-
est mediums of exchange on the North Ameri-
can continent. The Pueblo Indians have been
creating wampum for over 900 years, and are
true artesans in a craft that had its inception
in the days when the great inland sea began its
recession from this part of the world. The
Santo Domingo Indians are among the last to
make true shell bead wampum 'in the original
way.
After many hours and days of patient hand
work these Indians having made some excel-
lent wampum strings, have come to Trader
Fred to trade them and receive in return food,
drugs, calico, shoes, building materials or any
of the other hundreds of items carried by Trad-
er Fred at the Santo Domingo Indian Trading
Post on U.S. 85 halfway between Albuquerque
and Santa Fe, New Mexico.
