San Luis Obispo County (Named after the mission) was one of
the original twenty seven counties of the state. San Luis
Obispo has always been the county seat. The first tile manu-
factured in California was made here after three bad fires.
After the success of this experiment all the mission were cover-
ed with a tile roof from 1784 on. Gaspar de Portola's expe-
dition camped near here on Sept. 3, 1769 and in April of 1775
Juan Bautista de Anza made a stop. The county has a great
number of ranches that are old Spanish grants...M. P.
