Oldest part, built late 1600's by Jacob Pierce, died
on expedition to repel Indians attacking Schenectady,
1690, and his successor Peter Brown, who operated
a grist mill behind the house on Blind Brook. Later
a famous tavern known as “Haviland's" and as
"Penfield's,” which entertained George Washington,
John Adams, and General Lafayette.
In the 19th century, Rye's first Post Office, though
it had been the Post and Stage stop since the
middle 1700's. From 1905 to 1965 the City Hall
of Rye.
