HIGH WATER MARK MONUMENT. At the
battle of Gettysburg, the Union line was broken at the "copse
of trees," which was unquestionably the "high water mark"
of the Civil War, for the tide had indeed turned; the incident
is recorded upon the open pages of an immense bronze volume.
It was here that Armistead and Cushing died side by side,
in the thickest of the fight, and in a hand to hand combat.
