THE SOLDIERS NATIONAL MONUMENT is
65 feet high; the pedestal, 25 feet square, is surrounded by
four figures typifying War, Peace, History and Plenty, while
the shaft supports a white marble statue of the Genius of
Liberty, holding in extended hand a laurel wreath,. emblematical
of victory. The corner stone was laid July 4th, 1865, and the
monument was dedicated July 1st, 1869; it cost $50,000.
