YORKTOWN MONUMENT. Erected by the
American Congress to commemorate the final victory of the
greatest war for independence. The corner stone was laid ou
Oct. 19, 1881. The shaft is capped with a statue of Liberty.
On the base are the emblems of the alliance between the
U. S. and France and thirteeu female figures representing the
thirteeu original states.
